Yi Yi (2000)

I was glad i watched it in two sittings–so the screenshots look off after the sixth one, had to watched the second half off the Criterion Blu-Ray after starting with the Kani's–,this movie felt longer than my last watch of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Still, it is great; following the lives of the Jian family and adjacent people over the course of a year, after the Grandmother of the family suffers a stroke, which opens up the can of worms that has been in motion for a long time.
It's one of those «Ozu-ian» movies, where you are a ghost, following those people; a genre which i like more and more as i age out of life. Yang-Yang, the 8 year old boy of the family, is positioned as «the star» of the show, due to him being the right age to have ideas about life and being brave and curios enough, to test them, despite the odds–one of them being a teacher who needs his stick fed to him…
«Can we only know half of the truth?.» is a question i was glad to hear, hoping to remember it when necessary.
